Subject:Teapot Marked "Qianlong Period Make"
Posted By: Adele Fri, Feb 06, 2015 IP: 65.216.182.2

I found this teapot and finally got a translation for the bottom mark. It says "Qianlong Period Make". Can anyone help me date/value the teapot?

This is a late 20th century or subsequent transfer-decorated teapot. The Qianlong mark is just part of the decoration and of no import to the dating except for the fact that it also was applied using a printed transfer.

The European technique for decorating porcelain with paper transfers was picked up by the Japanese from Dutch traders not long after its development in the 18th century. However, China, with its greater pool of skilled artisans, didn't adopt this method on a widespread commercial scale until the early 20th century.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Adele,

The mark is used on imperial pieces. Imperial pieces are of superlative quality. The mark on this is "off centre"; it is not imperial, or qianlong period.
I would guess 20th century.

Sorry for the bad news.

Best regards, Jeff
