Subject:Chinese Painting Help (Rat)!

Hi!

I was just trying to translate the calligraphy on this Chinese painting of a Chrysanthemum, and was hoping that someone here who is good with Chinese art (Rat!) might be able to help...

I think it translates as -

菊畫艾琳馬田 - 'Yilin Ma Tian Ju painting' / 'Jú huà ài lín mǎtián'

With the red seal translating as -

艾琳馬田 - 'Yilin Ma Tian' / 'Ài lín mǎtián'

I can't find any reference to this name 'Yilin Ma Tian', so either my translation is incorrect, or they are an 'unknown'?

Thanks Super! I am very stupid, I didn't consider that it was a transliteration of a western name!

Exactly right, Super has nailed it. The name you've correctly identified is a sinification of the name of the western artist who painted this picture and is undoubtedly some variant of, if not exactly one of, the names Super has mentioned. Eileen/Irene did a pretty decent job making a "boneless" style flower by impressing the side of her brush on the paper in wedgelike strokes, but she got tripped up on the characters because she is not used to manipulating the brush as a writing implement. The large dots and the beginning and ends of her strokes show that she rested too long in one spot.

Rat you made me laugh! You are so right, Irene / Eileen did a good job with the Chrysanthemum, but I should have known by looking at the terrible calligraphy 'bleed' that this was not an authentic Chinese painting. Anyway, this has been funny!! Thanks Rat & Super!
