Subject:Bronze Apple Vase
Posted By: Lynda Mon, Feb 09, 2015 IP: 58.6.130.96

Hi, I have this bronze vase - 7 1/2" high, 4 1/2" wide and 36oz weight. The attached photos of the mark are formed by 1) filling the marking with cornflour and rubbing back, and 2) my best drawing. The mark is proud and was clearly formed from the mold into which the bronze was poured. I particularly like the simplicity (almost art deco) nature of the piece. Can anyone please help to identify artist, age, anything??
Cheers, Lynda

good idea with the flour. The only thing I can make sense of suggests that your bronze is Chinese: the large character on the right seems to be Wang (王). But I can't make sense of the left half of the seal legend. It is unheard of to repeat a surname on a seal, so I imagine the whole left side is a single character that's not coming to mind at the moment. It will probably help if you posted clear photos of the object itself.

I read the first character as 示.
Third character?
Probably Chinese, not Japanese.

Guy.

Some more photos. Thanks for your interest. I think some of the lines on the marking are from writing into the clay mold and leaving ridges.
