Subject:Identify plate/bowl-maker, age
Posted By: Susan Shelton Thu, Feb 19, 2015 IP: 70.190.43.206

Hello. I purchased six of these plates with high edge or bowls from an estate of an antique store owner. He had a lot of porcelain and glass items mostly English or European and they were authentic. I loved these and purchased cause they are so pretty but family could not give me any info about them. The original owner had them at $75 a piece at his store but got them for much less. Each plate or bowl measures approx. 8 inches in diameter-writing on front in gold and red symbol with gold trim and decoration-blue flow. I would love to know if Chinese or Japanese or were made somewhere else? Maker and age-anything info would help. Thank you in advance.

Japanese, Kutani ware, likely 20th century but not exactly sure when, 2nd half? Someone may recognize the second seal as a maker's mark. The gold inscriptions are poems.

Thank you so much. Would love to know if the red symbol is a maker mark. Was curious if item was made in England but you have answered that.

Hi Susan and Rat,

Japanese indeed but I think it is a bit older (19th ct.) and probably from the Shida kiln.
See the link (Japanese) to compare.

Arjan

Thank you Arjan. The photos in the Shida link were exactly like what the bowls I have. Can you translate to English for me? Susan
