Subject:Japanese Satsuma Cup Artist, Seal & Translation Help Please!
Posted By: Joe Tue, Feb 24, 2015 IP: 24.44.45.107

I was wondering if anyone can help me with identifying the pictured cup and translation. It is very thin walled and hand painted. Is anyone also able to help with identifying the artist? Thank you in advance. Joe

The kanji on the base reads "Wataya Sei" (綿谷製), "Made by Wataya". This is the mark of a well known Kutani porcelain producer, as opposed to Satsuma ware, which is a stoneware type. I'd estimate this cup by its decoration to date to around the late Meiji period or circa 1900.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi, this is not Satsuma, but Kutani, I think very late Meiji or more likely Taisho period. The mark says "Wataya Sei", made by Wataya, which was a kiln in the Kaga area.
