Subject:My Satsuma tea set on Gotheborg.com marked Ryozan.
Posted By: Robin Bodiford Thu, Feb 26, 2015 IP: 66.170.193.122

I wanted to show you all my Satsuma tea set. I still have it and it also has cups and saucers. It's been at least SEVERAL years ago that I asked Mr. Nilsson about it and sent him this picture. He was SO gracious and pleasant and asked my permission to use it on his site to help others. Of course, I agreed! Mr. Nilsson has never had the chance to examine it in person, so the help he gave me was very much appreciated! On the link I've provided, scroll down to .885 under Ryozan (not the famous one as he explains in his description). He made an educated guess of 1920. I remember at the time that someone else (unfortunately can't remember name) placed it around the 1880's, but again, without handling it in person, there is only so much that can be gleamed from pictures. Personally, I don't think my pictures do it justice but then again, I'm my own worst critic. I was so honored that Mr. Nilsson requested to use it! Anyway, any other thoughts on its age or the mark? Should I invest time and money to have it formally authenticated? We've enjoyed many, many compliments and conversations as it was displayed for our martial arts school which was closed two years ago. Now, I'm at a loss as to which items I should keep with nowhere to display them and which ones I should sell. We have a very small home and we are actually thinking about selling it, buying an RV and traveling. Your input is appreciated! Thank you!

It occurred to me that people may want additional proof that this tea set is actually mine (and not just the pictures from Gotheborg, so I unpacked the set and took pictures this morning. Sorry about the quality as these were taken with my iphone. If requested, I can get better quality pictures. I always thought the green back ground made the set look a little more yellow than it actually is, so hopefully this background will provide a little truer color. I just love the amount of gold that is on this set! It really stands out. I remember that when Mr. Nilsson was talking to me about the mark, he said that he didn't (at that time) recall seeing that exact mark before but that doesn't mean that it won't show up in the future and change people's opinion of date, etc. He wisely said additional information and documentation from future information and discoveries have a way of rewriting the knowledge we have today. I think that was probably my first real lesson in collecting Asian art. If we do end up selling our home and I no longer have space for safe keeping and displaying this tea set, it'll probably be one of the things I will miss the most! Again, thanks to everyone for their input!

Do have it appraised if you wish to insure or sell it. It would be expensive for an export tea set, but not in everyone's taste.

Do not wrap with bubble wrap next to the enamel. It will make marks and might even peel off some of the enamel. Use soft cloth or disposable diapers next to the pieces, and then use the bubble wrap for cushioning.

Thank you so very much for your reply! I will take your advice about wrapping it to heart. I will get it appraised for possible selling, as you suggest. Again, your input is very much appreciated!
