Subject:Japanese Scroll Possibly by Nakabayashi Chikkei? Artist/Translation Help!

I was able to purchase the pictured scroll, which was list as possibly by Japanese artist Nakabayashi Chikkei. It came with in a wooden scroll case with a label attached to the end. Can anyone tell me if this is correct and or help with the translation on the scroll and label? I believe Chikkei did a lot of his work in Chinese inscriptions. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I compared the signature (Chikkei Hayashi Narishige) and far more important, the seals ('Seigyo no in' & 'azana (alias) Shofu'), with a known original on view in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

I do not see any real discrepancies there with your painting so there is a good chance that you have an original.

Chikkei was an Nanga painter (Southern school painter) or Bunjinga (literati) painter. This late Edo period style of painting always depicted Chinese landscapes or similar subjects.

Thank you very much for your time, help and expertise in this matter. It is greatly appreciated. I have recently started collecting Asian artwork and basically a novice (trying to learn more from reading books and the internet) was able to purchase the scroll at a very reasonable price. Now I need to figure out what is the best way to display the piece.

You may already know this, but the inscription dates the picture to a winter day in 1848; also the box goes with the picture: it is labeled with the artist's name.

Thanks Rat. I overlooked the date.

Should be read in Japanese as 戊申之冬日 ('Tsuchinoe-saru no fuyubi' - or 'A winter day in the 45th year of the sexagenary cycle', which corresponds with 1848.
