Subject:Japanese Kutani Vase Signature ID
Posted By: Pete Mon, Mar 23, 2015 IP: 188.29.60.104

Can anyone help identify the marks on this vase?
It looks like Kutani and is finely painted. Shame about the neck damage. Height 15cm

Hi Pete,
Yep... it is Kutani and that's what a part of the mark says. The second and third character (right) reads "Kutani" I can't help you at the moment with the maker/shop name (maybe Bill H. can)on the left but the last on is "sei" or made. The first character before "Kutani" is on/in a fire flow but is probabbly "Oite" meaning at.

Regards,

Arjan

Thanks, but I may have to take a course in oracle bones to fathom all of this one.

Thanks, would the first character also mean kiln since it means 'in a fire flow'?

No,Pete.. thats not what I meant. Sorry my English is rather limited. I mean that there is some impurety at the place of the first character caused by the firing of the porcelain. So that "damaged" the character a bit. Herewith two examples of the use of oite before "Kutani".

Regards,

Arjan
