Subject:identifying a plate
Posted By: Lindy Weintraub Wed, Mar 25, 2015 IP: 98.245.101.250

I would like to know something about this plate. Is it Japanese? Is it Chinese? does anyone recognize this mark? I have 2 of these plates, one of which the owner seemed to have chipped a mark into.

This is a Chinese plate with Lingzhi mushroom decoration. It was made during the 18th and 19th centuries. The mark is from the Yongzheng reign, 18th century.

Hi Lindy,

I vote for Chinese. If you google on "Tek Sing cargo" (pictures) you will find dishes with a same kind of decoration. That ship sank around 1822 and I think your dish is not far off that date. The mark is a so called shopmark. Herewith some examples of shopmarks of the Qing dynasty.

Regards,

Arjan
