Subject:?? Japanese wood shrine, memorial, plaque??
Posted By: paul Tue, May 05, 2015 IP: 98.176.254.186

Certainly looks Japanese, but what is it?

Measures: 11" x 9" x 3"

The slot in back opens into a large hollow space inside.

Also, what does it say?

Thanks.

no idea about its purpose, but the font/calligraphy style is frequently seen in modern Japanese commercial signage, and as it turns out there's a Japanese dumpling chain by this name, but I really have no idea if there's any connection. the characters are 王将 (though the version of the second character that I have typed varies slightly from the writing on your object because I am using a Chinese language input editor).

This the King (Osho) in the Japanese chess play (shogi), here presented I presume, as some large decorative piece bringing good luck for the New Year.

Guy.
