Subject:a japanese print/painting with samurai harakiri

Hi! I found this art, with a samurai pictured in it performing harakire. Can anyone read the Japanese? Or is it Chinese? Does anyone know who the artist is? Thanks!

Nice actor woodblock print (yakusha-e) designed by the famous ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825), depicting the kabuki actor Bando Mitsugoro III (1775-1831) in the role of 'Soga no Juro' in the play 'Haruno Sakai tokiwagi Soga', performed at the Ichimura theatre in Edo (now Tokyo), 1st month of 1810.

The print was published by Tsuruya Kinsuke.

BTW: the actor is not performing 'harikiri' (in Japanese pronounced as 'seppuku') but he is holding a writing brush (can be dangerous also...).

He is holding a Japanese smoking pipe('kiseru'), not a writing brush.

It is a Japanese wood block print (Ukiyoe). If you take a close up of the signature and any other writing on it, someone is likely to provide more information.

That guy looks remarkably bored with the whole thing, doesn't he? :-)

Others will better identify the subject and artist of your print, but the figure is only holding a pipe, not killing himself. The artist seems to be one of the Kunisadas (signature in lower left).

Your Japanese woodblock print is by Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825). It looks to be of the actor Bando Mitsugoro III smoking a pipe.

wow, thanks a lot, how do you know this all? Amazing, I am very happy with your answers. I did not see the brush...oops! Now I do...shame on me!

Perhaps a very wrong question, but do you think its worth more than 30 euros?

You can triple or quadruple the amount.

I just want to add that originally, as it was often the case, this print was issued as a diptych together with a print depicting the onnagata actor (actor in a female role) Iwai Hanshiro V
