Subject:Chinese or Japanese Planter
Posted By: Shelley Leonard Wed, May 20, 2015 IP: 70.199.137.166

I am trying to find out something about this pot, its mark, age, purpose, and is it Chinese? Thank you for any help

It's Japanese - the mark reads 'Ishimitsu'. Found two other similar items at Japanese online auctions, both with a blue and white decoration, signed by this maker. Both sellers refer to Imari ware but no date is given. I presume Meiji or Taisho period.

Guy.

I'm no ceramics expert but its form suggests a Korean origin to me, cf:

The signature is 石光.

This signature has popped up here on pottery in the past (link), with a more or less empirical judgment that the piece was Japanese and the mark is the surname Ishimitsu. Perhaps other current contributors on Japanese topics could weigh in.

Best regards,

Bill H.
