Subject:What is this?
Posted By: Carol Mon, Jun 08, 2015 IP: 24.19.0.179

My mother has owned this for years, and has been using it as an inbox on her desk. Can anyone tell me what is was designed to be? It has 11 spots on the inside where it appears that something was perhaps attached before glazing - they are rough/sandy feeling. It measures about 8" by 13". Thanks for any info you can provide!

A Suiban. A shallow container w/o drainage holes used by Japanese in flower arrangement or to display suiseki (decorative stones). This one is more likely for flower arrangements.

Looks like a Chinese narcissus planter. Google those three words and you will find images of a bunch more.
