Need help identifying these 2 pieces. Large carved heavy wood boy and girl statues, hand painted and mirror jeweled.
Anybody know where these come from or what their purpose is ?

Thank You

These figurines are Thai handicrafts, made around the northern city of Chiang Mai during the late 20th century or subsequently. Decorative value only.

Best regards,

Seems to me like you've got two excellent examples in your possession. If you can't find others, it may have something to do with the Vietnam War having been over for nigh on 40 years now. No more GIs taking R&R in Bangkok and shipping these cute kid statues back to their spouses or significant others. Keep watching eBay. Another one will turn up one day I'm sure.

I didn't look at it this way, now it makes sense.
Thanks Bill.

The other way to look at it is from the perspective of eBay sellers and auction houses being just as much in the dark as you are about the origins of these carvings. The closest any of the following auctioneers got to the Thai origins of their carved kids was "Southeast Asia" and "China" in the descriptions. All of these examples look to me to be in the same Thai style. I would suppose that the low auction prices aren't much of an incentive for anyone to copy these carvings nowadays.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hmmm, the links suffered a failure to launch for some reason, possibly my absentmindedness.
