Subject:Japanese urn/vase

My father brought this urn/vase back with him from Japan in 1945. The family knows little about the piece and research has found nothing similar for comparison. Any help provided would be appreciated and a value guesstimate would be a bonus. It's a lovely piece. Thank you in advance!

Given the provenance, your vase dates from 1921 to 1941. Use the link and scroll down to Rokuzo, Mark 891 for additional information. The torii is a gateway before sacred ground. Best wishes, Jim

Your vase is finished with moriage, a process where thick colored porcelain paste is applied to the form as you would ice a cake. The gold is achieved by the use of a gold bearing compound applied as paint which upon firing deposits a thin layer of pure gold. The theme, very popular in Asian art, is that of Kannon (Quan Yin in China) the Japanese goddess of mercy shown with arhats, holy men, hence the halos. There is likely a mark on the base, needed for further identification, which you can add with another reply to your post. Regards, Jim

Thank you so much for responding, Jim. I'm going to read up on what you mentioned to learn more about the piece/process. I added a photo of the bottom of the piece this morning; I suspect it is still working its way through moderation, but will check again later to make sure it shows up.

Meanwhile, there is indeed a mark on the bottom, and underneath that mark, it is stamped made in Japan. While it may not be a valuable item, I'm impressed that a young GI returning home would have the presence of mind to shop for such a memento.
