Your censer could be Chinese Shiwan ware or, less likely, Japanese Shiga ware. Both of these wares used Jun-like glazes.

Here's another censer with a dragon hiding underneath its Junyao-type glaze. At first glance, I thought it might be a Chinese product of Shiwan. However, the more I pondered what probably is its original lid, with a chrysanthemum and surrounding "karakusa" type arabesque scroll, I decided it likely is 19th century Japanese. In the absence of a mark, I speculate it may be Edo-period (pre 1868) but am always open to other persuasion re dating.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks for the separate message and photos. I agree, from the face-on view, the dragon looks more like a Chinese Chilong (immature dragon) than Japanese. If you could post a clear overhead shot of the impressed mark taken in glancing (sideways) light, I or others in the forum ,may be able to make out the characters.

Best regards,

Bill H.
