Subject:Interesting Asian bronze
Posted By: Caroline S Tue, Jun 23, 2015 IP: 108.251.34.121

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could translate the signature/shed some light on the bronze I encountered. Doesn't show signs of significant age, but it has quite nice workmanship. Thank you in advance.

the Japan experts will jump on this but I like it quite a bit and wonder if it forms a rebus of some sort. Meiji? The maker's name reads something like "Hall of Laughing Flowers"

You will be very pleased with my answer because this is of course an exquisite incense burner shaped like a radish topped by a mouse sealed 'Shôkaken'.

An identical object is in the Musée Cernushi in Paris since 1896 (see link below).

Read also the Wiki page of Ôshima Joun about the attribution of the art name 'Shôkaken'.
