Subject:Bowls bought in Japan
Posted By: Anton Thu, Jul 02, 2015 IP: 83.251.122.188

Hi!

I bought two bowls in a Japanese antique shop last week. I tried to ask the salesperson about their history but she did not understand english. Therefore, in order to find out when they were made and probably were and by whom, I have searched the internet for a couple of days, trying to match the bowls' marks with pictures. The problem is that I cannot find the right ones. I think it says Great Ming something...

Do anyone know what the marking says? I am grateful for all help :)

/Anton

The base of the bowl shown here has a fake Chinese Ming mark of "Made during the Jiajing Reign" (Da Ming Jia-jing Nian Zhi), which would be transliterated in Japanese as "Dai Ming Ka-sei Nen Sei". Perhaps Arjan or another collector of Japanese wares could offer a more authoritative comment on the age of your bowls, but I would speculate that they may date to the late Edo Period (pre-1868).

Best regards,

Bill H.
