Subject:Signature on these duo paintings
Posted By: Melissa Sat, Jul 11, 2015 IP: 108.0.118.200

Hello, I have had these painting for a little over 10 years and I know nothing about them. I got some information and for the most part, people are telling me they are Chinese but some say Japanese. So my question is which one is it, and can anymore make out the signature on them? Thank you.

It's a date not a signature. April in the year 庚子 or 庚午。 The second character is very sketchy. Could be 1930 0r 1960. Hard to say which.

The seal shows the Chinese surname Chen (but the remaining two characters aren't sufficiently legible), so that rules out a Japanese artist at least.

Thank you! I have been told that the red stamp is the artist? Is that correct?

Is it possible for someone to point out which characters you identified as Chen and from there I can see if on either painting the characters that aren't legible might be clearer. I could try to get a better photo. Thank you for your time and information!

Looking again I have grown more doubtful that the reading is "Chen", but yes, the seal seems to contain the artist's name in three characters, the large one on the right side being what I (mis?)read as Chen, the other two in a column likely being the artist's given name.
