Subject:Trumpet-Shaped Chinese Stand? Whaddizit?
Posted By: Craig Mon, Jul 13, 2015 IP: 168.103.48.93

An acquaintance owns this and is wondering what it is. It's pretty large, about 2.5' tall, and breaks into three sections. Looks Chinese to me, and is made of brass with cloisenne. I think it might be a brazier stand, but have never seen anything quite like it. Does anyone have a clue as to what this actually is?

You have placed it upside down. This is a "gu"-form beaker, a ritual wine beaker shape that dates in bronze from China's Shang Dynasty; yours may be a 19th/20th century Japanese version, or a modern Chinese version. The elephant head handles reflect Qing dynasty imperial cloisonne forms.

Google "gu beaker" to see some. Don't rely on information from the online auctioneers though. Instead try the leading auction houses (Sotheby's, Christies).

Excellent information, and it does appear correct.

Thank you Rat and Ernest. I will pass this along to the owner.

My guess: A modern version of a KU vase.
