Subject:In need of calligraphy translation
Posted By: eita Wed, Jul 15, 2015 IP: 114.121.236.175

Hi all,
I received a calligraphy painting from my korean acquaintance last summer. I wanna hang it on my room but I don't know the meaning of this words and I can't read it either since it is not written in Hangul. So, if anyone could translate it, it could be a big help. Thank you!

"The mouth is the doorway to the heart"

口乃心之門戶

Subject:The mouth is the door of one's heart 口乃心之門
Posted By: Super Thu, Jul 16, 2015

First sentence at the far right, from top to bottom:

座右銘 motto

Middle sentence from top to bottom:

口乃心之門

The mouth is the door of one's heart

which means whatever one would say would reflect how one truly feels in one's heart and therefore one's true character. Therefore if the door (mouth) was not built well it may not close well, means one would easily say a lot of things that one may regret.

The last sentence at the left is simply the name of some type of calligraphy (or books) study club and the chop marks of the calligrapher (cannot see it well). Others may help in translating them.

Hope this help!

Super

Hi,Eita:

You are very welcome. In my old age, I actually forgot the last Chinese character, 戶 as listed by mikeoz and I like his translation "The mouth is the doorway to the heart" In this case, 門戶 is the doorway or entrance. Cheers.

Super
