Subject:Japanese Buddha Info-Dainichi Nyorai? Character Translation
Posted By: Nels Gullerud Thu, Jul 16, 2015 IP: 24.73.18.101 Would Appreciate help in identifying age, details and origin of this 16 1/2" polychrome wood carved Japanese buddha on lotus throne. Looks similar to the Dainichi Nyorai statues from Nara area but thought it might also be of a lineage master monk instead, as the robes and face seem more of that style. It has carved flaming nimbus panel behind with single character - Can anyone translate it? The polychrome is on a thick gesso, sealed back compartment for mantra/ dedication. |
