Subject:Whimsical Ginger Jar Lamp
Posted By: Lawrence Morris Mon, Jul 20, 2015 IP: 70.44.101.53

Hi, All:
I am trying to get an idea of when this lamp (or vase, as it may have originally been)was made, and its value. The first two pictures are views of this 14" high lamp, the third is the pottery mark. Can anyone help me? Thank you in advance.

Your "kids playing" Chinese vase-become-lamp has a six-character faux mark of the Qing Jiaqing reign that's associated with Macau-decorated porcelain blanks made at Jingdezhen in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century. Of course, the vase could have been drilled much later. The piece would be of decorative value only.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Could it have been given as a gift to newlyweds - wishing them many future generations of boys?

Before 1978, your idea might have been OK almost everywhere there were Chinese communities, but the Mainland introduced their One-Child family planning policy in that year.

Best regards,
