Subject:Gilt laquer wooden buddha
Posted By: Stuart Jeffcoat Thu, Jul 23, 2015 IP: 122.61.156.144

Hello. I would welcome any thoughts on this statue including where it is from, likely age etc. Is seems to be made of wood (4 parts I think) hollowed out and then joined with some type of pegs inside. Over the top of this is some type of fabric (hemp?), gesso or something and gilt lacquer. The last photo is of an inside join. I will post more photos in reply to this message. It stands about 1m high. Thanks in advance. Have a great day.

This image appears stylistically to be Japanese, perhaps an image of Kannon, and possibly made by the technique called "dry lacquer", or "kanshitsu" (乾漆像) in Japanese, involving lacquer soaked layers of hemp cloth molded over a wooden armature or core.

I'm somewhat familiar with the Burmese use of dry lacquer, but others in the forum may be versed in the Japanese use of this process.

Meanwhile, here's an Encyclopedia Britannica link concerning the subject.

Best regards,

Bill H.
