Subject:Japanese woodblock prints, need help with translation
Posted By: Charles Wed, Jul 22, 2015 IP: 70.16.208.17 Hello, I just found two Japanese woodblock prints. They are 11-1/4" x 5-5/8" and on identical paper. If anyone can translate the signatures, or knows anything about these the information would be very much appreciated. Thank You |

Posted By: Stan Wed, Jul 22, 2015 The one on the left is signed Eishi. However, given the dyes used, it was produced long after he died. I haven't identified the other artist. I'll look at it when I get a chance. |

Posted By: Charles Mon, Jul 27, 2015 Hello, Thank you for the information. I like that print with the extra step of applying the snow with paint on top of the image. I found a third similar print. It is a little bit larger and the colors aren't quite as bright, but the paper looks similar. This one has the extra step of embossing on the robes. Again, any information is appreciated. Thank You |

Posted By: Stan Tue, Jul 28, 2015 The signature is Ippitsusai Buncho (1765 - 1792). Given the condition, this is also likely a later repro. I was unable to locate a known original to confirm my suspicion. |

Posted By: geo. Wed, Jul 29, 2015 BTW, the "snow" you mentioned is called "gofun" and IIRC, is made of ground oyster shell. It's applied to the finished print by dipping a stiff brush in the gofun and the flicking the bristles with a finger to sort of spray a few drop of gofun on the print. It always seemed like a risky operation, but I guess it works. |
