Subject:19thc Chinese butterfly plates
Posted By: I.Clark Sat, Aug 01, 2015 IP: 80.44.66.186

Can anyone tell me where I can find a list of the various makers markings on the rear of the fairly common porcelain butterfly and bird plates if such a list exists

Do not know of marks for porcelains with those specific motifs.

Try www.gotheborg.com for marks.

20th-century wares made for tourist or export might have had stickers with manufacturer name or just country of origin. Wholesalers may have contracted with variety of makers and not have particular company identified.

There are a number of variants among Chinese butterfly & bird plates. Most of these porcelains made for export in the 19th century were unmarked until after 1890, when among other affected countries, the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act required China to add markings of "CHINA", and later "MADE IN CHINA" to such dishes. Perhaps you could find an online image of the particular style you're interested in to post with your query.

Best regards,

Bill H.
