Can anyone tell me about this embroidery piece?

This is an "Eight Immortals" banner, depicting the group of magical fairy-like deities who figure prominently into Daoist beliefs. The workmanship is a mixture of traditional embroidery needlework and the couching technique, whereby metallic cords are tacked onto the background to represent clouds and other accents. Metal bosses have been added, probably to help the banner hang straight.

The figures are rendered somewhat naively, suggesting several possibilities, such as the embroidery having been the work of a child engaged in a project to learn the attributes and appearances of the Immortals. Or it could have been made in Southeast Asia by an artisan who wasn't fully acquainted with the traditional Chinese style. In either case, I'd think the dilution of traditional style likely indicates it was made circa the mid-20th century or later.

Here's a link to an earlier forum thread concerning some banners that I believe may be a bit earlier and in any case more in the traditional Chinese style than yours.

Best regards,

Bill H.
