Subject:Info on possible Signature on base of brass snuff box please. Thank you

I also have this small 1.5 inch square snuff box made of sheet brass. I presume it is reasonable common but wondered on its age, origin and if the marks on the base actually meant something. Please excuse my ignorance again and thank you to all the contributors on this site. I have no knowledge at all on these items but have still spent many hours reading the responses to posts. Great site, great knowledge and great people. Well done all. Chris

Flipped 90-degrees left, the inscribed characters appear to be 八九, the number 89. I believe your box looks to be Japanese.

the marks are the characters for the numbers 8 and 9
