Posted By: Irene Mon, Oct 12, 2015 IP: 76.121.121.205

Thank you for earlier information! This art work is not a block print, there is no bleeding on the back. i would like to know if it is a real painting. It is on heavy woven type of material the black border is also painted on the material. Thanks for your help!!!

It is indeed a woodblock print designed by Kawase Hasui, published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1937, titled "Yumoto Spa, Nikko". My guess is that it is laid down to the black fabric and that it was pressed down onto that backing so hard that the texture is visible through the print paper.

The sausage shaped seal in the lower right border of the print is a copyright notice seal of Watanabe, known as the "C" seal, which was used between 1929 and 1942.

The signature is of Kawase Hasui - one of the premier Shin Hanga woodblock print artists.

If it's not printed on Japanese washi then it's some sort of reproduction made simply for decoration.

The title of this print is Evening at Yumoto Hot Springs, Nikko. It was done in 1937.

It looks like a woodblock. With modern paper and inks there's not necessarily any bleed through onto the back.
