Subject:Jiaqing Famille Rose Gourd/Calabash Vase (amazing)
Posted By: B. Cha Fri, Nov 13, 2015 IP: 24.67.136.123

For your consideration, a very rare Jiaqing Famille Rose Double Gourd Vase. In perfect condition and of masterful quality.

I am seeking opinions on the authenticity and value of this piece. Two similar vases went for over $1M a few years ago at Christies (although, this piece is twice the size of them). It has been sent for Christie's authentication but I respect the opinions of collectors here just as much. Any information is valued.

There is quite a story with this piece.....

To make a long story short: This and some other pieces were bought in the 1920s from a man whose father was an Imperial artist (who tried to save some items from the revolution in 1911). They were then hidden in a cave in the 1930s (during Japanese invasion) while the family fled. They remained there until the late 1970s when the great grandson went to retrieve the property hidden in the cave. It has remained in the family until I bought it.

A pair of 20th century 11 inch-high vases just like yours sold at Christie's Paris on 9 June 2015 (see link) for a hammer price of Euro 15,000 (US$16,929). The online result doesn't say if they actually got paid for the auction. However, the pair of vases earlier had sold at Bukowski's, Stockholm, on 5 December 2003, as lot 1537.

I'd suggest you place your trust in whatever Christie's has to say about your vase and its alleged provenance. The story you cite conflicts with their assessment that the Jiaqing marks on their two vases were apocryphal.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill's advice is sound.

As a self-exercise, try to make a list for yourself of what you believe is "masterful" about this vase. Seek that darker green and opaque yellow enamels in authenticated Jiaqing-reign pieces.

Good hunting.

The link to the Christies auction seems to have been truncated somehow by the forum link URL, so here it is to paste in your browser if interested:
