Subject:Antique Archaic Bronze Censer Ding
Posted By: Eric Tipton Thu, Nov 19, 2015 IP: 71.192.229.230

I recently acquired a great antique Chinese collection, including this wonderful archaic ding censer. I would love to know more, including the period, and value if possible. Thanks so much for any help!

Impossible to offer you specifics on the basis of a single poor quality photograph. Meanwhile you might compare it archaic bronzes on Sotheby's and Christies websites or in museum collections such as the Freer Gallery to locate any similar examples.

Okay, thanks a lot for the response. It is tough because I know there are a lot of reproductions, or old copies out there, so I was hoping someone would recognize the design. Rat, do you have a lot of knowledge in Asian antiques? I would love to share a bunch of items with you if you do, my email is [email protected]

Hi Eric,
In my opinion this is an unnatural patina and may well prove to be brass rather than bronze; it is not possible to be certain from this poor quality photograph.
However, you should find evidence of spacers (which kept the mould walls apart)and thick legs and lugs would usually be clay filled, providing T.L (thermoluminescence)core material.
If you wish to confirm this, contact Oxford Authentication in England.
Regards
Tony

picture is too small to discuss detail about your ding, but from your picture alone, ding phony shape and patina overall look, no doubt that this is a modern copy, in particular some low quality copies are made using copper alloys junks... hence the poor quality of the bronze
