Dear Asian Art Forum I found this in my mother house when clearing out after her death and have no idea what it is or where it originated from. As far as I know my mother had no deals with the East at all. It appears to be a person lying and it has a silt in the opposite end to the head which if you blow into it produces a whistles.

You don't give the dimensions of this cute ceramic kid, who looks Chinese to me. By coincidence, though, I ran across a set of four almost identical items in an antique store the day after you posted your query. They were about four inches in length and none, from what could be see of them in the showcase, appeared to have a slit in the base like your little guy.

The unboxed set I saw was labeled only as an Asian decoration, but I surmise these pieces might originally have been sold as chopstick or spoon rests. Neither they nor yours appear to have any great age to them.

Best regards,

Bill H.
