Subject:Help with possible antique asian pottery vase, signed
Posted By: Joe Sat, Jan 16, 2016 IP: 107.196.224.212

I came into an older pottery vase, it is signed, on the bottom is what appears to be an old price sticker of what I think is US currency of $400.

I know very little about it, looking for someone who can help.
At first I thought it was Egyptian but the lampshade-like hats I don't believe would be Egyptian.

If the label is original to the vase, it would probably be 400 Thai baht, or about US$11.00 at current rates. The writing on the vase and the costumes worn by the figures both appear to be Thai.

Best regards,

Bill H.

The writing looks Thai or Khmer (Cambodian), and modern. This appears non-traditional, mix & match of cultural arts from S.E. Asia.

A popular tourist activity in Southeast Asia is pottery classes (maybe the number at the bottom is the student ID for pickup/delivery after firing). For example in Bau Truc Pottery Village in South Vietnam or even in Siem Reap, Cambodia many thousands of tourists make pottery like this every month.

The hands/fingers are in traditional 'Apsara' posing and one is holding Lotus Buds, which tells me Cambodian/Thai... but the faces look almost Vietnamese to me. They appear to be wearing Batik clothing (Indonesian, Bali?). The hats again seem to be Thai farmer hats.

As for the type of clay used, I have no idea. Hopefully this is enough for you to go on and narrow down your search into its origin.

This is a strange one. Hopefully someone can translate the inscription at the bottom and solve this mystery.
