Subject:Imari jar - japanese or european?
Posted By: Mat Mon, May 07, 2012 IP: 87.202.90.134

I do not really know how to date and to locate this Imari jar I bought recently. I thought it was an 18th century japanese export jar, and the antique dealer supported this too. As I searched for similar examples, I got a little bit unsure about this date. Could it be later, that is Meiji, or even be an european product (like Samson), or was I right in the beginning? It is about 40 cm high and unfortunately broken and restored in a bad way. I hope the Imari experts can help me once again! Thanks a lot Mat

I think I found by chance a possible maker for my jar. There is an Imari-Style vase in the Hermitage Museum that on which the floral scrolls ar until now the closest match to my jar: https://www.hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/digital-collection/08.+Applied+Arts/930358/?lng=de
In my opinion the style of the floral scrolls and dve waved border is very similar, and I have never seen exactly this type of blossoms on Japanese porcelain or other European Imari imitations.
What do you think about it?
