Subject:Chinese Blind or Forbidden Stitch on Silk
Posted By: Jim W Fri, Jan 22, 2016 IP: 66.169.108.80

Very large embroidery silk panel is roughly 60 x 60 inches, the patterns executed with blind or forbidden stitches. The names supposedly derive from resulting eye strain in the young girls who produced the work, or that the stitch was not allowed outside the Forbidden City. There are numerous examples on eBay and elsewhere on line, but the largest I can find is less than half this size. Searches of this forum produced six results, but not answers for me.
My photos are low resolution for overall and high resolution small sections. I am unable to resolve the tiny stitches of which there are literally thousands. As soon as this posts I will add more photos. My questions are these: Approximate age?; Significance or meaning of the design?; Location online of any approximating this size? Any other comments are much welcomed. Thank you for any response, Jim

This is a fragment of a Chinese peony flower robe from the 19th c. I believe these robes were for weddings.

Tim, thank you very much for the reply. I searched Qing wedding dresses, but someone else suggested Qing court robes and I got close matches there. Thanks again, Jim
