Subject:Sumi-E Description?
Posted By: Anne Thu, Jan 21, 2016 IP: 24.163.0.132

I believe this is Sumi-E with the brush marks and bold ink. Any idea what the description is on the side? - Thanks!

The bold characters at the top of the first picture, 竹报平安, form a Chinese proverb. The first two characters refer to the old way of writing letters on bamboo strips, and the next two combine to mean "peaceful". Literally, it says "A message of peace in a letter to the family". I believe there is more to it in a metaphoric sense but can't recall what it is. The next part of the inscription may start with the number "91", and the last two characters and red seal both seem to be 克勒, possibly the artist's name. Hopefully, someone else can fill in the gaps and add some Japanese transcriptions.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill, thank you for taking the time to reply. It's good to know the art is expressing "a message of peace". I'm hoping someone will fill in the gaps on the rest of the inscription and seal. It's always nice to know the story.

the section with the numbers reads 1984 (一九八四年)

Thank you! Should I assume it's 1984? I noticed another post at 1914. I think it looks modern but I would have guessed a little prior to 1984 judging from the aging of the art frame. Of course 1984 has been 3 decades. I removed it from the old glass frame due to the musty smell and debris.

stylistically it can't (my opinion) date from 1914, and I can't think of another reading of the character creating the challenge but "8", so I vote for 1984.

Hi Bill,

The 91 is a date, which stylistically could be correct.

一九一四年。 1914 ?

Mike.

Thank you, Mike. I noticed you questioned 1914 but another mentioned 1984. I'm not sure which date it is but I appreciate all comments.

Would love to know about the red seal and more on the description if anyone has knowledge about it.

The red seal reads 克勤which is the same with last two characters。 it is the painter's name.
