Subject:Help to ID Ivory Vase w/ Marks?
Posted By: LeeAnn Mon, Jun 18, 2012 IP: 64.64.161.231

I recently inheirited this ivory vase from my mother. The ivory type is as of yet unidentified but perhaps someone can read or recognizes the maker's mark?

Hi, this is not ivory. I found a pair of these in the middle seventies, about two years apart, one at a flea market, the other at an estate sale, and did not see another until Clint Eastwoods 1997 film of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was released. A pair of these appears in several scenes on a chest of drawers in John Kelsos (played by John Cusack) Carriage House apartment. The vases are 12 tall with a black base, made of molded composition. They are thick walled, heavy, and fully lined inside from the throat down. The script is different on each vase, thus likely added to wax forms before molding by the lost wax process. They are signed on the bottom with two characters in a circle, the same on both. I know of one other pair besides the Easwood pair. Yours makes the seventh vase, but is missing the base and thus the mark. I posted the mark from mine on this forum on June 14. Regards, Jim

Molded plastic (resin) decorative items do not have high prices even when new.

Hello again, after looking at the script in the throat of my vases and yours, I'm now sure it was added to the finished vases by hand. The characters are probably the same, but with very different 'handwriting'. A translation would be nice. Regards, Jim

This would appear to be a European Chinoiserie product adorned with quasi-Asian decoration and pseudo characters. Such items were popular from the early-to-mid-20th century, so popular in fact that Japanese makers produced some to compete in Westerm markets. You might wish to search eBay and on-line antique malls under 'chinoiserie' for other information.

Best regards,

Bill H.
