Subject:Chinese Ginger Jar
Posted By: Aubrey Thu, Feb 04, 2016 IP: 86.147.152.205

I bought this Cloisonne ginger jar 1970 as early 19th C Chinese form a reputable dealer.
I am hoping for a more exact provenance
It has no signature - enamelled interior and base
with gilded rim . Heavy gauge body
Unable to find similar piece

The style of the flowers and bamboo shows up on pieces with "CHINA" and "Made In China" stamps from the first quarter of the 20th century.
These stamps indicate pieces made for commercial export after 1890, but the lack of a base stamp doesn't mean the piece was earlier than 1890; rather, it was likely sold in a shop to an individual buyer, or perhaps had a paper label.

Attached are three sets of pictures for comparison of floral and bamboo motifs: a piece marked "Peking 1886" apparently by a purchaser who could write in 19th century copperplate script; two pieces that seem to date from either side of World War I; floral pieces that seem to date from 1900s-1930s.

Your jar seems to be about a century old, perhaps from a decade either side of 1920. It's a carefully made piece, not as fussy as Victorian designs.

Subject:A Laotianli vase with similar flowers and leaves pattern

Again, for purposes of comparison.
Pieces with this signature are usually beautifully composed and very neatly worked, as is your jar.
Laotianli appears in the Chinese cloisonne exhibitors lists for the 1904 St. Louis and 1915 San Francisco expositions. Possibly the signature came into use around that time? The Laotianli atelier was still operational during the early 1920s, possibly into the early 1930s.
