I need help to identify this jar.
The mark is almost unreadable; I guess it could be Tongzhi.
Is the piece of period of is a modern copy?

This is a late 20th century or subsequent product in an Indian lotus scroll with bats motif, possibly transfer-decorated somewhere besides Mainland China. The faux mark does appear to be "Tongzhi Nian Zhi" (Made during the Tongzhi Reign). Decorative value only. Probably should avoid use as a food container, as this is the type of thing that often came with a paper label warning of lead content in the glaze.

In addition to Bill's wise advice, modern seekers should be aware that just because something is made recently does not mean it is a "reproduction" or copy of something else.

Many utilitarian shapes have been made for centuries, just because practical -- not to imitate something antique. They may vary a bit in proportions and materials from era to era, but still have been made for use, not to deceive.

My parents grew up poor in USA, and when they first saw ceramics imported from Asia their eyes were astounded by the bright colors. This to them was precious, and for a long time "colored" their views of such things. They never really did accept that the hastily made items for export were not much appreciated by those who were making and selling them.
