Subject:Unknown Satsuma mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Mon, Apr 11, 2016 IP: 84.26.216.123

Hi,
I found this Satsuma mark (xxxzan) underneath a vase of around 1890. The description stated that this was a signature of an artist working for the Yabu Meizan studio (??). Unfortunately I was not able to find the 1st character.
Anyone an idea?
Thanks in advance,
Martin.

Reads 'Ryôzan' (良山).
Are you sure it is not Kutani ware instead of Satsuma? Please post an image of the whole object.

Guy.

Guy,

Thanks, I'm sure you're right with the name.
Normally the Satsuma Ryozan is written 亮山 and often together with the Yasuda logo.

Here the picture you asked for, Kutani or Satsuma?
The description about the vase says; "This artist signed Satsuma earthenware vase....".

Regards,
Martin

Seems Satsuma to me and of good quality.

Most quality Meiji pieces signed 'Ryôzan' refer indeed to Okamoto Ryôzan (岡本亮山).

The artist here, seems to be someone else.
I found a reference to a Satsuma bowl at Bonhams, with the name of the decorator written in the same manner (良山), cfr. link below.

Guy,
Thanks again. I've learned a lot about Japanese markings from you and others on this forum, great tool.

Martin
