Subject:Appreciate help identifying this mark
Posted By: Annie Mon, Apr 18, 2016 IP: 31.52.234.134

I was given this vase and would really like to know a bit about it - have not been able to identify the markings on the base. A translation would be a great start!

The mark reads "Hichozan Fukagawa Tsukuru", which I believe could be translated as "By Hichozan for Fukagawa", as Hichozan was a name associated with a studio that enameled porcelains for Fukagawa at the Mikawachi kilns during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Your vase is quite high quality export ware for the period. Would look nice on my unmarked stand shown below with another Fukagawa vase on it. I believe the stand also may be a Fukagawa product.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi,

The marks spells: Hichozan Fukagawa Zo 肥碟山 深川造 which means: made by Fukagawa (for) Hichozan (1860-1880). More information at the link below.

Martin
