Subject:"priceless" piece from the Srednick Collection
Posted By: Dan C Sat, Apr 09, 2016 IP: 208.100.154.228

We have inherited this small pot from a friend who bought it from the Srednick Collection (I think purchased in LA.) She told us it was "priceless" and had great value. The authenticity certificate says it is Famille Rose porcelain produced during the Yung Cheng reign. It has no mark other than that on the top of the lid. I have not seen anything like this in my research. Can you give an approximate value for this? Was she sold a "bill of goods"? Thanks much for the assistance.

If the certificate was ever genuine it must have accompanied a different piece of porcelain.

Such multi-color glaze splotches were not in the imperial kilns' repertoire during the Qing Dynasty Yung-Cheng (Yongzheng) reign.

Do an internet search for images of what "famille rose" decoration looked like then (1723-1735). It took much scholarly investigation to prove that "famille rose" decoration began during this reign.

Since you do not state dimensions, or show a straight-on photograph (profile) so we can see the whole shape, and do not bestow an in-focus view of the piece's base or of the inside without the lid, not much can be guessed about where or why this might have been made.

Thank you both for your reply. In my search for Familie Rose images, I felt the same, but wanted to have more knowledgable people verify that there was not any "outlier" styles I had not seen. Thank you for your help. I will see if they can provide the requested info for any identification you might glean from new photos.

Perhaps a misunderstanding? Why not check with the source? There is a book, about the Srednick collection, on Amazon, etc. Perhaps there is a catalog available of the Srednick collection that would resolve the matter. There also seem to be some Srednick collection pieces listed on ebay. I would have guessed that it might be modern Japanese art pottery, but have no expertise and must defer to those who do have expertise in ceramics.

Any time something changes hands there is room for misunderstanding. So someone bought something at a Srednick store (they dealt in a lot of things) and maybe a certificate became attached to something other than the original purchase. Same thing occurs with boxes.

An internet search will give a picture of what they dealt in.

No offense on the piece posted in this thread, but the word "priceless" in the title brought back fond memories.

Back in the 70's and 80's, I worked for a large importer of antiques in Southern California, and we periodically held week-long auctions in order to clear out inventory and make room for more container loads which were on the water.

Occasionally, there would be an item which no one would bid on at any price, we of course referred to such items as "priceless".

Cheers
Gman

Side note: It is gorgeous, no matter the origin!
