Subject:Help with Satsuma mark (Wada Hogetsu?)
Posted By: Martin Michels Sun, May 01, 2016 IP: 84.26.216.123

Hi,

I my ongoing search to understand Japanese ceramics markings I came upon this one, see photo. The documentation was only telling that it's a Wada Hogetsu mark.
It spells:
Dai Nippon: 大日本 (that's the easy part),
Wada Hogetsu: 和田 浦月 (but translation was Wada Ura Tsuki),
and I can't find the 1st character of the left 3,
the other 2 are: 林 (Hatashi) 堂 (Do).
1) Is Wada Hogetsu the correct name?
2) Is it a potter or decorator?
3) What is the 1st character of xx? Hayashi Do and what is the correct name of this "Do"?
If anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Martin.

I believe the last line reads down as 芳林堂 (literally 'Fragrant Forest Hall'). I found the transliteration Yoshi Hayashido in a Google translation of the same characters as used in a bookstore name. I'd wait until one of the forum's Japanese experts comments before considering that to be applicable to the mark on your dish.

Best regards,

Bill H.

芳 Pronounced Ho and meaning fragrant. Thus the Fragrant Forest Hall.

The firm name (or shop name) reads 芳林堂 (Horindô). Could have been the retailer's name.

Wada Hogetsu is correct.

Guy.
