Subject:Lacquered bamboo & porcelain tea cups with lids
Posted By: Sally Thu, Apr 28, 2016 IP: 68.84.205.205

Hello:

I'm with a historical association that recently acquired these tea cups that are made of lacquered bamboo and hand painted porcelain. Could someone please help me identify the age and any information about the origin or history of these cups? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Sally

I think they are more likely Japanese cups for drinking warm sake, rather than tea cups. They are probably from the Meiji period, late 19th to early 20th c, or possibly a little later into the Taisho period. They were likely made for export to the West. Do they come out of the holders? The blue and white porcelain would have been made in Arita, Seto, or Hirado. The mark, which I cannot read, may provide an answer.

Hi Robert:

Thank you for your message! The lacquered bamboo is part of the cup and is not removable. There was another posting tonight on this message thread and it turns out that these are Rantai ware or Rantai Inouye tea cups.

The tea cups are Rantai ware or Rantai Inouye (from my collection below), and made in Japan.

Hi Claus:

Your cup looks very similar to the set that we have. Thank you for solving this mystery!
