Subject:Stone Carving

Hello! My local thrift store has this lovely carving for the price shown in the pictures. Can anyone tell me anything about from my pictures? I know it's probably very hard to tell what stone it is from pictures. However, can you give me some options on the types of stone it looks like?

It's about 6" tall.

Quite a nice seal stone that has been carved for a tourist with the name Loesch, which has also been transliterated into Chinese characters to make the sound of the name.

This rubbish can be ground off and a legitimate seal carved into the stone.

Your Chinese style "name chop", carved in the late 20th century or subsequently as a vanity for someone probably named "Margarita" or "Marge Loesch", appears to be soapstone (steatite). The phonetics for the Chinese simplified characters, which are shown upside down, would be read from left to right when flipped as "Ma Ge Li Te", which could represent the name and surname as shown above, or just the name "Margarita".

Depending on the value of your local currency, this might not be what I consider in the USA to be a thrift store price tag.

Marble come to mind.. but here we need definitely sharp pictures

Thank you so much! Yes, I agree $300 US is just too much. It did appear to be a nice, detailed carving done by a talented carver. I was intrigued with the markings on the bottom, so thank for the info on that!

I have a new camera that I haven't quite figured out yet. Sorry, the pictures were not completely clear. The carving being so expensive, I don't think it's worth troubling you with it anymore.

I appreciate the help!
