Subject:unidentified Chinese painting
Posted By: Jacob Wed, May 18, 2016 IP: 86.120.26.60

Hello,

I wonder if someone could tell me a few words about this Chinese painting. How old could it be ? In what school/style is it made ? Can someone read the red seals ?

Thank you very much !

This is a Japanese painting rather than Chinese, though in Chinese style, perhaps first half 20th century. The seals seem to read 啟書記印, 啟書記画印章; someone better versed in Japanese art may be able to find something for you.

I ran the below characters through the online JDIC Japanese names link and came up with the following historical name:

啓書記 (けいしょき) Keishoki (Shoukei), Muromachi-era Zen monk and artist.

Another hit from Google indicated his life is only known from inscriptions on his paintings.

The characters 印 and 印章 both mean "seal" or "stamp", while 画 is a "picture" or "painting".

Best regards,

Bill H

the poster's painting seems certain to be 20th century to me

Thank you all so much for the precious information !

So, you suggest it is a 20th century reproduction ? I tend to agree. It cannot be that old.

Yes, a late 19th to early 20th century copy (not a reproduction) I guess, after Keishoki.

Guy.
