Posted By: DavidW Wed, May 18, 2016 IP: 66.211.124.145

According to literature nobody has ever found the QingMing festival scroll executed by Qiu Ying the important Ming Dynasty artist. This scroll left China in 1949 by an OSS agent working there..Any input would be great. Some frames of the scroll shown and the sig..also the scroll is narrow about 10 inches and image about 17.5 ft long..

Not sure what literature you are referring to, but Liaoning Provincial Museum has one attributed to Qiu

and there are at least a dozen other Qingming scrolls around the world. The one you have pictured is not by Qiu, who has been widely faked.

Hi, thanks for the input..the link you sent is to most likely late 18th century scroll because of the wide format. 12 inches or 30.5 cm.
A Chinese girl got her PhD in Art History in BC a couple years ago on these QingMing scrolls. Probably world wide there are 80+ copies. The file is too large to post on the forum..but i will try to find the link. Her conclusion was Qiu Ying probably did not make a scroll. This is incorrect

Hi, here is the link to the PhD dissertation by Su-Chen Chang on the Qingming scroll. I also ran a Radiocarbon on the residue of the Gilt title on the outside of the scroll..The centerline date was 1808 AD. This was most likely the 2nd silking or restoration of the scroll..I ran x-ray analysis of the paints and they are consistent with Ming Dynasty paint composition. The painting is Ming dynasty and paint are toxic metal compounds.

Nice, thanks for sharing this, Roderick Whitfield is who I think of on this topic, but his thesis is quite a bit older. The picture you've shown reminds me of Suzhou pian, and Qiu Ying was a favorite artist for imitation there. What makes you think it's by Qiu?

The definitive study of Qiu Ying will soon be published by Dr Stephen Little from the LACMA.
I had a chance to speak to him briefly after his
presentation at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
here is a link to that talk on authenticating
traditional Chinese Painting.

According to the older and current literature..this is based on MS or PhD thesis more or less People in China and US studying...the Ming Artist Qiu Ying was more or less a regular joe Genius because he didn't have any schooling in art..The conclusion was by aforesaid was Qiu's work copied all forms and styles of art..and thus, therefore nobody has found key indicator..fingerprint of his work..I found his unique anomaly..and is in this painting
