This is a gift (memento)that was given to the Rev. (pastor, minster) 喜爾 (Xi Er) and his wife upon their departures from the 正定縣 Zhengding County, located in Hebei Province, by the congregation (disciples, members)of the Zhengding County Assemblies of Gods (church).
In the first sentence at the right of the plate, from top to bottom:
喜爾 - the Chinese name of the reverend who preached there; he was probably an American or other non-Chinese guts;
牧師 - minister, pastor;
夫婦 - husband and wife;
離 - leaving, departing from;
正 - 正定縣 Zhengding County, located in Hebei Province.
紀念 - commemorate, memento
The 4 large characters in the middle, from right to left are:
善牧群羊 - the good shepherd of the flock of sheep
The first sentence to the left of the 4 large Chinese characters:
First sentence:
Gifted respectfully by the congregation of the Zhengding County Assemblies of Gods
Second sentence:
May (fifth month) (with date blank, not engraved), 1940. It almost appears that they did not have time to engrave the departure date because the minister and his probably left in a hurry. That was understandable since it was in the midst of WW2. I could not establish the exact identity of the minister.
