Subject:Need Help With Identification of Figurene
Posted By: John Papendick Sun, Jun 19, 2016 IP: 72.90.158.203

This piece belonged to my father who recently passed away. I'm at a total loss as to what it is. Seems as though it has a circular grain to it. Great detail in the facial features. Stands about 6" tall. I'm thinking tooth or tusk only because of grain. No idea on age or origin. Any help is appreciated. I'm shocked that I never saw this in our house as a kid. Maybe new? He served in the Korean War. Not sure when of where he picked this up.

It looks to be a Japanese carving called an okimono, a type of decorative statue. They are similar to but larger than netsuke, which would usually have two holes in the back. Look for a mark/signature on the bottom. It could be ivory, but that can be hard to tell. Hold it to your face; if it feels cold, it could be ivory. Many US servicemen passed through or took leave time in Japan after 1945. Hope this helps with some leads. Bob D
