Subject:chinese ink painting.. age-artist-subject matter??
Posted By: yurike Wed, Jun 29, 2016 IP: 173.69.168.228

Good evening...

I recently acquired this 30x10.75 in. Chinese ink drawing. It is 3 pieces of paper made into 1 long sheet. It was framed and not glued down. I bought this for the skillful brushwork and very nice detail. I took it out of the frame hoping for a signature or seal mark but found none. Can anyone give an opinion as to age and/or subject matter and possible artist based on style and technique. Sometimes artists have certain characteristics and ways of depicting faces and expressions that appear in their drawings and artwork. Thank you very much for any suggestions and answers.

don't recognize the artist or the subject of the picture (surely a scene from Chinese literature/folklore/religious lore though. Super?) but this is fairly skillful work even though there's not a lot of variation in brushwork or the depiction of the clothing and faces. i would like to see what a polished work by this artist looks like.

Chen Hongshou (late Ming) and Shitao (early Qing) are two obvious historical referents here, but the condition and some casualness in the way the garments etc are rendered suggest a 20th century date to me. Am wondering if this is a study for a more elaborate handscroll. definitely worth trying to research further but there are few obvious clues as to what direction to look.

Thank you rat.
I was trending towards religious due to the iconography of the items they are carrying. A brazier, bamboo, a gourd, what looks like peaches, a flower, a scroll and other items. No idea on the overall meaning though.
